Q&A

leave feeling prepared & empowered

Hey I'm Emilia

(she/her) I am a SAG-certified Intimacy coordinator, having received training with CINTIMA, IDC, and Heartland Intimacy, as well as on-set and on-stage experience. Intimacy work feels like a combination of my strengths and everything that I care about.

I remember exactly how I felt when I learned about the existence and position of an Intimacy Director. I had just finished directing a heightened scene from the play “The Flick” by Annie Baker.

I remember the actors looking at me with nervousness and hesitation as we began to move through the scene. By the time we got to the end, they both expressed feelings of relief and comfort after having worked with me, and something unlocked in my heart.

I care so much about actors and people in general. I’ve always known that my purpose as a storyteller was intrinsically linked with equality, consent, and inclusivity. Concepts that are deeply valued by Intimacy Coordinators and Directors. It is not lost on me that this position has only existed for a number of years in its current form. I am so grateful to be alive and a part of this industry while it is making such a significant shift of growth. Intimacy work is the future, and I am excited to be a part of it.

TESTIMONIALS

Working with Emilia Ray

Producer & Actor

Hannah Kean

Director

“Working with Emilia has truly been one of the top moments of my career so far. She comes from a place of such love, passion, and compassion when she approaches the work, which is contagious but also deeply inspiring.

It's not chiefly what she did that made me feel safe, it's even more so that she created an environment of freedom,

exploration, inspiration and safety. She explains things clearly but kindly, and it never felt like there was a silly

question. I feel so much more equipped now to understand how to handle scripted intimacy, and also interactions on set. It was truly a profound experience. There are deeper lessons I learned that I cannot put into words, and I can only

hope that many, many more artists get the chance to work with Emilia so that they can feel the bedrock of their work

shift in the way that I have.”

"Working with Emilia on my first feature film, I was introduced to the art form that is intimacy coordination. I knew I

wanted to offer my actors a safe and professional environment to explore the intimate sides of the story. However, I

had no idea I would also be getting an artist who would help me find the nuance and subtlety of a kiss that would elevate my film and my story. A true collaboration where everyone was better for having her on set. I will forever work with intimacy coordinators because of this experience!"

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FAQs

What is an Intimacy Professional?

An Intimacy Professional works with productions to safely and professionally tell stories of heightened content. This includes moments of nudity, sexual simulation, and other intimate situations.

What do you do?

I think of intimacy work as three fold: I am an advocate for actors and for everyone in production. I ensure that boundaries are respected and consent is upheld. I am a liaison between departments, working to communicate the needs of actors with costumes, props, legal, etc. And I am a choreographer who is trained to assist a director in telling intimate stories through movement.

What is the difference between an Intimacy Director & an Intimacy Coordinator?

An Intimacy Director is used for theatre and live production. Intimacy Coordinators work in film, television, and other on screen media. I work professionally as both an ID and an IC.

Will I be learning any choreography?

Nope! You will not be asked to perform any choreographed material. However, there will be guided optional exercises that could include physical touch with other participants.

Are there any resources you'll provide after the talk?

Yes! I'll send you home with lots of resources.

Will there be time to ask questions?

Absolutely, that's what I'm here for. Ask away.

I have more questions.

Great! Email Aidan@CrashActing with any Q's.
